Will its magic be back? https://monodes.com/predaelli/2020/12/21/will-its-magic-be-back/ https://monodes.com/predaelli/2020/12/21/will-its-magic-be-back/#respond Mon, 21 Dec 2020 17:18:00 +0000 https://monodes.com/predaelli/?p=7876 Apple M1 foreshadows Rise of RISC-V

I dearly hope that we will soon have a RISC-V based, massively parallel and with many specialized coprocessors. The magic of Amiga will soon be back, updated for the 21th century.

Is Apple M1 the new Amiga? https://monodes.com/predaelli/2020/12/08/is-apple-m1-the-new-amiga/ https://monodes.com/predaelli/2020/12/08/is-apple-m1-the-new-amiga/#comments Tue, 08 Dec 2020 08:25:37 +0000 https://monodes.com/predaelli/?p=7813 I loved Apple. Not the Apple of DRMs and its golden prison where you can’t really control your hardware; I loved the Apple that loved Software Libero. Then it mutated into a company that crushes people freedoms while smiling.

I like to have control of my hardware. I don’t want to use hardware that treats me like an enemy as DRM-laded machines do or from a company that is actively trying to kill the idea of Software Libero.

So I’ve mixed reactions when reading about Apple M1. I’m happy that they find a way to get so good performances but I fear their “proprietary-ness”, their total-closure toward other OSes. I would change my mind when Apple will help people port Linux, BSD and other free-as-in-freedom operative systems. I fear I will have to wait for a long time as they have been actively doing the opposite in recent years.

Today I’ve read

Why Is Apple’s M1 Chip So Fast?

Real world experience with the new M1 Macs have started ticking in. They are fast. Real fast. But why? What is the magic?

There are a couple of passages that striked me:

  • Instead of adding ever more general-purpose CPU cores, Apple has followed another strategy: They have started adding ever more specialized chips doing a few specialized tasks.
    … and
  • “Unified Memory Architecture”
These features sounds A LOT LIKE the approach of Amiga:
  • Addind specialized chips, Paola, Agnus, Blitter… shall I go on?
  • UMA, accessible to CPU, GPU and other specialized processing units. The very same concept of “Chip memory” in Amiga.

Now I do dearly hope that some company use the same recipe, discovered by Amiga almost 40 years ago.

I hope that the claims made about RISC-V in

Micro Magic RISC-V Core Claims to Beat Apple M1 and Arm Cortex-A9

are realistic.

We are living interesing times.

Volete far girare un sistema “Amiga-like”?

AEROS is a hybrid distribution of AROS (www.aros.org) and Linux (in the moment debian 6.0 for X86 and 8.0 for ARM is used) available for ARM and x86 systems.

Quindi non avete più scuse!

Also available here, with a nice way to change colors according to daytime. According to Daughter of the King also

“Seize the Day was a calendar program made by in 1994 by Buena Vista software. It features graphics that at the time, were revolutionary because of the way they handled color cycling. These images were static bitmaps, but by changing color values, they appear animated. What is also impressive about these images is that they had full day night cycles built in, rendered also through color cycling.
A few years ago, a html5 version was made. A copy was uncovered online and there is a way to use the program through DOSbox. As well, one of the original programmers for the project, Iam Gilman, has thought of the idea of remaking it, open sourced, for modern machines.”

Copper bars sunsets https://monodes.com/predaelli/2016/05/02/copper-bars-sunsets/ https://monodes.com/predaelli/2016/05/02/copper-bars-sunsets/#respond Mon, 02 May 2016 21:50:03 +0000 http://monodes.com/predaelli/?p=1498 I saw this effect too many times on Amiga games, thanks to the almighty Copper. These photos of sunsets  captured with a smartphone almost look like Copper-bars. When I was younger I thought that those were only games fantasies, but those looks like 1bit backgrounds with a 24bit AAA CopperList applied…
