Petrarch (1304-1374) was a poet admired for his love sonnets. Helicon was the mountain where the nine Greek muses of the arts dwelt; poets were supposed to have imbibed from its springs.

The Franco-Flemish composer and singer Orlando di Lasso (Lassus) was one of the most highly respected and revered musicians of his day. More than any other composer of the Renaissance, his works embody the spirit of the cosmopolitan “Renaissance Man.”

Often ranked alongside Palestrina as a principal composer of 16th century sacred music, Lassus also composed a considerable amount of secular compositions, revealing his versatility and excellence in the art of vocal composition. He frequently wrote letters that abruptly switched languages – from Dutch to French, German, Italian and Latin – apparently because he could.

Matona, mia cara, is a wonderful example of Lassus’ ability to go from church composer to a worldly artist. A tedesco in the villanella tradition, this work is a delightfully bawdy depiction of a German mercenary soldier who tries desperately in an unfamiliar language and strange land to win the affections of an Italian lady. Full of puns and imperfect Italian, the rustic setting of the text to music enhances the comic story behind the poem.

Perché con tutto il bene che gli voglio a Wikipedia e nonostante il fatto che su molti temi sia assolutamente affidabile, nutro davvero qualche dubbio che questa foto del naviglio della Martesana sia stata realmente scattata a Gorla nel 1925…

Da cosa lo deduco? Dalla foggia del caseggiato sul fondo, quello di 5 cinque piani, che ha finiture tipiche degli anni 50-60. Negli anni 20 gli edifici anche popolari non li facevano così, senza gronde, col tetto piano, coi balconi semi-incassati. Quell’edificio urla “dopoguerra!” lontano un parsec…

Avevo profonda stima di lui, così come stimo il figlio e il cognato. Fidatissimi, coscienziosi e grandi lavoratori, di specchiata onestà.

Non ho potuto fare altro che mandare un tardivo messaggio di cordoglio. Tuttavia

Vorrei poter condividere l’ottimismo della santa e di Carlo. Purtroppo questa citazione mi inquieta. Negli anni mi sono progressivamente reso conto che quasi tutte le persone di cui mi fidavo hanno tradito la mia fiducia. Come posso esserne amico o confidente?

E nel mio caso questo ahimè include anche le persone a cui si è affidati dalla Divina Provvidenza: tua madre e tuo padre, dei quali è assolutamente naturale fidarsi. Nemmeno di loro posso più fidarmi. Le persone di cui posso davvero fidarmi oramai le conto sulle dita di due mani. E mi avanzano delle dita.

Amici sono coloro a cui non temiamo di aprire il nostro cuore e ciò che vi è in esso

Più passa il tempo più l’elenco di quelli a cui non temo di confidarmi si assottiglia. Direi che l’insieme è oramai praticamente vuoto
