Ubuntu, una delle distribuzioni Linux più popolari al mondo, sta per compiere una svolta epocale: abbandonare GNU/Linux per abbracciare tecnologie moderne,

Non è una questione di “evoluzione tecnologica” e di “rimanere al passo coi tempi”.

Vogliono prendere programmi di base, robusti, che funzionano bene, che da decenni risultano stabili e sottoposti a controlli minuziosi e di comprovata sicurezza con qualcosa scritta ex-novo in Rust, che è certamente un buon linguaggio ma non è la panacea di ogni male.

Inoltre la stragrande maggioranza dei commentatori non colgono la questione fondamentale: non è se siano scritti in Rust, in C, Assembly o Visual Basic cambi qualcosa, ma il fatto che la licenza che useranno, ossia “tipo MIT” permette di re-impacchettare il tutto e renderlo proprietario.

Linux e BSD son nati praticamente negli stessi anni. Linux ha prosperato perché ha usato licenze persistenti, mentre BSD è rimasto di nicchia perché la sua licenza non è persistente, esattamente come la MIT.
Il vero problema è che la maggior parte delle persone non coglie questo aspetto fondamentale.

La General Public License in tutte le sue edizioni rende persistenti le libertà che il suo autore concede a chi riceve la sua opera (il codice). Si dice che è una licenza a permesso d’autore ossia “copyleft” in inglese (letteralmente “permesso alla copia”) con un evidente e voluto gioco di parole in apparente contrapposizione con il “copyright” cioè il diritto alla copia. Le licenze di software libero non copyleft come quelle tipo BSD e MIT non sono persistenti, chiunque può prendere il codice e chiuderlo dentro ad un prodotto proprietario.

Synology’s upcoming Plus Series NAS systems will restrict full functionality to users who install the company’s self-branded hard drives, Tom’s Hardware is reporting, marking a significant shift in the consumer NAS market. While third-party drives will still work for basic storage, critical features including drive health monitoring, volume-wide deduplication, lifespan analysis, and automatic firmware updates will be disabled, the publication said.

The restriction doesn’t apply to Synology’s 2024 and older models, only affecting new Plus Series devices targeted at SMBs and advanced home users. Synology itself doesn’t manufacture drives but rebrands HDDs from major manufacturers like Seagate, Western Digital, and Toshiba, often with custom firmware that functions as DRM. According to Synology, the change follows successful implementation in their enterprise solutions and will deliver “higher performance, increased reliability, and more efficient support.” A workaround exists: users can initialize a non-Synology drive in an older Synology NAS and then migrate it to a new Plus model without restrictions.
