In 2016 alone, writes Steven Vaughan-Nichols, Microsoft <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/why-has-sql-server-come-to-linux-windows-only-cloud-makes-no-sense\/\">announced SQL Server on Linux<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/microsoft-integrates-visual-studio-with-open-source-eclipse-ide\/\">integrated Eclipse and Visual Studio<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/sonic-microsofts-first-linux-distribution\/\">launched an open-source network stack on Debian Linux<\/a>; and it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/microsoft-buys-into-ubuntu-linux-on-azure-hybrid-cloud\/\">adding Ubuntu Linux to its Azure Stack hybrid-cloud offering<\/a>. That&#8217;s all well and good, he says, but it&#8217;s not enough. There&#8217;s one thing Microsoft could do to gain real open-source trust: Stop forcing companies to pay for its bogus Android patents. But, there&#8217;s too much money at stake, writes sjvn, for this to ever happen. For instance, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/the-one-thing-microsoft-needs-to-do-to-gain-real-open-source-trust\/\">in its last quarter, volume licensing and patents, accounted for approximately 9% of Microsoft&#8217;s total revenue<\/a>.<\/i><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"p\">Quite right. But I also acknowledge that also <span class=\"by\"><a href=\"https:\/\/slashdot.org\/%7ESirJorgelOfBorgel\">SirJorgelOfBorgel<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"comment_otherdetails_51722201\" class=\"otherdetails\"><small><\/small><\/span>is quite reasonable:<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\n<div class=\"commentBody\">\n<div id=\"comment_body_51722201\">\n<blockquote><p>At this point, a large part of IT simply will never appreciate Microsoft, no matter what they do.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;d trust them if they&#8217;d only do X!&#8221; No, you wouldn&#8217;t. You&#8217;d figure out some other reason to hate them.<\/p>\n<p>News flash, it&#8217;s 2016, and Microsoft is no longer the most evil or dangerous bigcorp out there. Apple, Google, and Facebook, have all surpassed Microsoft. Can we get back to some actual issues?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>I can&#8217;t forget we were called &#8220;<em>a cancer<\/em>&#8221; but I must earnestly acknowledge that they weren&#8217;t the most evil knight anymore.
