To truly understand the seismic shifts in the Roman Rite during the twentieth century, one must look past the abstract theological debates of the Second Vatican Council and focus instead on the concrete mechanisms of history, which are invariably driven by the will and personality of specific individuals. History is not an impersonal force but a narrative crafted by the men who live it, and in the story of the modern liturgy, the lead character is undeniably Annibale Bugnini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

While the Novus Ordo Missae is often laid solely at the feet of Pope Paul VI, the true architecture of the reform was built much earlier by a man whose unique vision for the Church\u2019s prayer was matched only by his unparalleled ability to maneuver through the halls of Vatican power. Bugnini was a singular figure, a modernist with a clear, rationalist objective to strip the Mass of what he perceived as medieval accretions, and he possessed a persuasive brilliance that allowed him to bypass the traditional restraints of the papacy itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The precedent for the radical 1969 reforms was not established in the 1960s, but rather during the pontificate of Pope Pius XII, a man often remembered for his traditionalism but who unwittingly opened the door to the revolution. In 1948, Bugnini was appointed Secretary of the Commission for Liturgical Reform, and it was here that he began his work as a bureaucratic master.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He cultivated a reputation as a tireless expert, a man of “pastoral necessity” who convinced a physically ailing and intellectually preoccupied Pius XII that the ancient rites of Holy Week were no longer accessible to the modern mind. The 1955 reforms of Holy Week served as Bugnini\u2019s successful “trial run,” where he managed to dismantle centuries of organic liturgical development, slashing the prophecies of the Easter Vigil and altering the sacrificial character of Good Friday, under the guise of restoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pius XII, mistakenly trusting in Bugnini\u2019s expertise and his promises of a “pastoral awakening,” granted the legal authority required for these unprecedented changes, effectively teaching the liturgical experts that even the most sacred traditions could be edited if the right “expert” held the pen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The success of these earlier maneuvers provided Bugnini with a refined playbook for the post-conciliar era, where his persuasive character became the primary engine of change. The true nature of his influence is perhaps best captured by the testimony of those who worked alongside him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFather Louis Bouyer records that Father Bugnini would regularly insist on various changes in the liturgy, saying, \u201cThe Pope wants it so.\u201d But the French theologian recalls that when he spoke directly with Pope Paul VI about the proposed changes, the Pontiff told him that Father Bugnini had claimed the working committee was unanimous in seeking the changes. The resulting liturgical landscape was not merely the result of a “spirit of the Council,” but the culmination of one man\u2019s long-term strategy to replace the received tradition with his own vision, leaving a legacy where the liturgy remains in a state of permanent, restless reform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il successo di queste precedenti manovre forn\u00ec a Bugnini un raffinato manuale per l’era post-conciliare, dove il suo carattere persuasivo divenne il motore primario del cambiamento. “Padre Louis Bouyer riporta che Padre Bugnini insisteva regolarmente su vari cambiamenti nella liturgia, dicendo: “Il Papa vuole cos\u00ec. \u201d Ma il teologo francese ricorda che quando parl\u00f2 direttamente con Papa Paolo VI delle modifiche proposte, il Pontefice gli disse che Padre Bugnini aveva affermato che il comitato di lavoro era stato unanime nel cercare i cambiamenti.
