I’m quite an old-school IT user. I’ve been an active advocate of AmigaOS, which has a really usable multi-task with 1Mb of RAM yet I’m open to news.
Yesterday I experienced one of the rare moments when my machine became almosta unusable.
At first I thought it was just Firefox as I tend to keep several dozens pages open at a given time. Then I discovered that it was aptitude
‘s fault. I acknowledge it requires more memory that less “refined” tools but I never expected it was so memory hungry.
I shall say that aptitude has failed, and failed in a horrible way. It just ate all the memory of my machine, sixteen gigabytes of RAM, almost stoning it. I had to log it from the humble eeepc to discover it grew to the gargantuan size of more than ten gigabytes of resident memory without completing a task that was so light on resources with the plain old apt-get
to the point of being negligible.
So thank you, dear aptitute
, I’ll keep going on with my plain, old apt-get
.
