Today I’ve read «Linux Is Fine, Nothing to See Here» by lawless.tech. This passage got my attention:
The difference in question between GPL v.2.0 and v.3.0 is the inclusion of the non-rescission clause. GPL v.3.0 in § 2 Basic Permission stipulates:
“All rights granted under this License are granted for the term of copyright on the Program, and are irrevocable provided the stated conditions are met.”
I wasn’t aware that GPLv2 could be “rescissed” by the author. It is good to know that GPLv3 is designed to be persistent in this further way. That’s another good reason to use GPLv3.
While the article correctly states that licenses can’t really be withdrawn, it is good that GPLv3 made this explicit.
