Today, in my Fediverse flow of posts I found the Italian article «Favnyr il moderno file manager per Linux e Windows», i.e. «Favnyr the modern file manager for Linux and Windows» about a new multi-panel file manager.
I was going to start my usual old-man rant (yelling at clouds) as there are already at least two separate free-as-in-freedom projects with all those features: pcmanfm, its fork pcmanfm-qt and spacefm.
So I issued apt install spacefm pcmanfm on my Debian machine, ready to take a couple of screenshot. Too bad that running it without arguments just crashes the program. You must prompt spacefm –display=:0 I guess to force GTK3 library to use the X11 user interface instead of the “more modern” Wayland. PcManFM runs fine.
Now I understand why they started favnyr: spacefm has that taste of “let’s allow the user to tweak everything, fully exposing the mnitty/twitty technicalities” while pcmanfm only allows for two columns.
