Not only WhatsApp is proprietary software but it doesn’t even like to run on a pure Android release which I have to remind you is Free Software.

Sadly its freedom is not persistent so it can be turned and it is too often turned into proprietary.

Telegram happily runs on many terminals at the same time. You can move your SIM from a phone to another and it doesn’t have anything to quarry about. WhatsApp instead insists on having one and one only terminal to control. And it keep losing data unless you backup it on a proprietary service (aka Google Drive) and no, it doesn’t allow you to download it. Unless you “voluntary” choose to lock yourself into the golden and sweet prison of proprietary services.

It took me years to acknowledge it: Google’s walled garden is the same as Apple’s: a golden and comfortable prison.

Escaping those prisons is not easy neither fast.

I will escape. I will be free.

Sticking to FairPhone Open is one of the required steps. It shows how pervasive, sweet yet subtle are the shackles of the great G which by the way has shunned its choice not to be evil some years ago.

I’ve been mainly using Free as in freedom software since 1997. Now the time has come to really stick to freedom even in mobile.

Until my Puri.sm Librem5 will come. Then things will get serious.

Una ricerca americana certifica che la CO2 complessiva prodotta da questi veicoli è inferiore a quelli a gasolio solo nei pochi Paesi dove l’elettricità proviene da fonti rinnovabili

Che differenza questo articolo de l’Avvenire: «L’auto elettrica? Inquina anche più del diesel» contro articoli più raffazzonati come questo su blitzquotidiano.it. Da notare che lo studio statunitense riportato da Avvenire conferma un altro norvegese riportato da 6sicuro.it già nel 2015 dove scrivevano:

Uno studio che arriva da Oslo entra a gamba tesa sulle auto elettriche: inquinano più dei tradizionali benzina e diesel. ….e questo dipende in larga misura dai processi utilizzati per produrre energia elettrica nelle diverse zone del mondo. … Innanzitutto, l’analisi rileva che la produzione di una vettura elettrica è più inquinante di quella di una automobile “normale”. …

E poi arriva l’affondo. Se per alimentare le vetture elettriche si usa energia derivata da fonti “pulite”, allora la riduzione delle emissioni e dei gas di scarico diventa un vantaggio tangibile. Altrimenti, siamo punto e a capo. Il problema non si pone in Europa, dove l’energia è ottenuta da fonti diversi (alcune delle quali “green”). Niente da fare, invece, laddove l’energia elettrica si ottiene principalmente (se non quasi esclusivamente) da fonti non rinnovabili.

Ed è un’ottima notizia, non solo per questioni di riservatezza ma anche perché

«Uno studio di Ghostery dimostra che il 55,4% del tempo necessario a caricare un normale sito web viene passato a caricare tracker di terze parti. Per gli utenti che si trovano a usare reti lente, l’effetto può essere anche peggiore».

Non avrei detto che fosse così tanto!

Mozilla on Tuesday began testing a Firefox extension that shows you its best guesses for what you want to see on the web. From a report: The Advance web extension is available for anyone from today and can analyze content on current active web pages to recommend related tidbits you may want to “read next” from other websites. It will also surface recommendations based on your recent browsing history in a “for you” section. With the extension installed, you just browse the web as you normally would and the little sidebar will show things that are relevant to what you’ve been looking at. The extension is powered by Laserlike, a VC-funded, machine learning-powered “interest search engine” that delivers personalized content. As such, Laserlike will receive users’ browsing history — something Mozilla wants people to understand before they install the extension. But the company has also built in some tools to boost control and data transparency.
